Protect Your Home — Hire a Licensed Contractor

When you hire a contractor, you’re not just paying for labor — you’re trusting someone with your property, your money, and your peace of mind. That’s why working with a CSLB licensed and insured contractor matters. It helps protect you from poor workmanship, unfinished jobs, and costly repairs.

At Firm Tech Concrete, we believe in doing things the right way the first time — with professionalism, accountability, and quality work that lasts.

A Real Story: When a Cheap Bid Turns Into a Costly Fix

We had a couple, Jenny and Ruben, call us after a bad experience with an unlicensed contractor they hired for a yard project.

They originally hired someone to build a retaining wall and install artificial turf. The job looked “okay” at first glance, but once we inspected it, it was clear the work was done incorrectly from the ground up.

What We Found On-Site

Retaining Wall Issues

  • The wall was not filled with concrete, which caused cracking and weak structural support

  • The wall footing was either missing or not properly installed, putting the entire wall at risk

Artificial Turf Issues

  • Poor quality turf materials

  • No proper base preparation

  • No DG (decomposed granite) base installed

  • No weed fabric installed

  • Overall poor execution and finish

Unfortunately, after taking their money, the contractor disappeared, leaving Jenny and Ruben with a damaged project and a mess they didn’t deserve.

We Fixed It — But It Shouldn’t Have Happened

Jenny and Ruben called us in, and we stepped in to repair the damage, correct the installation issues, and rebuild the project the right way so it would last.

The hardest part is that when an unlicensed contractor does it wrong, homeowners often end up paying twice:

  1. Once for the original job

  2. Again to fix it properly

That’s why we tell every homeowner: don’t risk your property over a cheap bid.

This Is Only One of Many Stories We’ve Seen

Jenny and Ruben’s project is just one example of what we’ve come across in the field.

We’ve seen many situations where homeowners call us after:

  • A contractor takes payment and abandons the job

  • Work is started but never finished

  • Projects are executed by crews who don’t actually know the correct building process

  • Materials are skipped to cut costs (no base, no fabric, no reinforcement)

  • Contractors refuse to fix problems or don’t stand behind their work

  • Homeowners are left with unsafe construction, cracked concrete, poor drainage, or major cleanup issues

These problems are frustrating — and they can be expensive to correct. Most of the time, the homeowner just wanted a clean upgrade, not a stressful situation.

Why CSLB Licensing Matters (And What It Protects You From)

Hiring a CSLB licensed contractor isn’t just a “nice extra” — it’s a layer of protection for your project.

When You Hire a Licensed & Insured Contractor, You Get:

Accountability — your contractor has legal responsibility to complete work properly
Better protection from scams, unfinished jobs, and disappearing contractors
Insurance coverage (important if property damage happens)
More professional scopes, expectations, and timelines
Work performed to proper standards, including correct base prep, reinforcement, and installation methods

Most importantly, you get peace of mind knowing your contractor is operating the right way — not cutting corners or taking shortcuts that cause issues later.

Questions to Ask Before You Hire Any Contractor

Before you pay anyone, protect yourself by asking these questions:

1) Are you CSLB licensed?

Ask for their license number and verify it.

2) Are you insured?

Ask if they have liability insurance (and workers’ comp if applicable).

3) Can you provide a written scope of work?

A real contractor should clearly explain what is included: demo, base, materials, reinforcement, cleanup, and timeline.

4) What materials are you using?

For turf, ask about:

  • base material

  • weed barrier

  • edging / separation

  • drainage considerations

For concrete, ask about:

  • PSI strength

  • fiber/rebar use

  • thickness

  • control joints and finishing

5) Do you have photos of your work or recent projects?

If they don’t have real photos, be careful.
